The excellent Phoronix have a series of benchmarks of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars on Linux and on Vista… and, using a 512Mb ATI Radeon HD 2900XT with the latest drivers for each, the exact same machine managed a frame rate just over 19% higher on Linux than on Vista!
This is excellent news for the entire Linux community, a great step forwards for ATI, and another reason not to buy nVidia*. For Vista, however, the writing seems to be on the wall…
* My experience of nVidia has not been good on any platform recently… but to be fair, Phoronix have not yet benchmarked an nVidia card under the same conditions. The interesting question will be, with ATI forging ahead with its open-source driver programme, will nVidia finally be forced to abandon their unpopular binary blobs?
